How to Convert Only Selected Word Pages to PDF (2 Easy Methods)

You do not always need the whole document as a PDF. Maybe a client only needs the summary page, or you want to send pages 3 to 5 of a report without the internal notes. This guide shows you how to convert only selected Word pages to PDF using tools already built into Microsoft Word and Windows, with no add-ins or online converters.

It is for anyone who shares Word documents: office staff, students, teachers and freelancers. You will learn two methods (Print to PDF and Save As PDF), the exact page-range formats Word accepts, a worked example, and fixes for the problems people usually run into.

Method 1: Print Only the Pages You Need to PDF

This is the quickest way, and the only built-in method that lets you pick pages that are not next to each other.

Page Range Formats Word Accepts

The Pages box on the Print screen understands several formats:

You type Pages in the PDF
3 Page 3 only
1,3 Pages 1 and 3
2-10 Pages 2 to 10
1,3,7-9 Pages 1, 3, 7, 8 and 9
p2s3 Page 2 of section 3 (useful when page numbering restarts in each section)
p1s2-p4s2 Pages 1 to 4 of section 2
s2 The whole of section 2

Worked example

You have a 20-page project report. The client needs the cover page, the executive summary on page 3 and the budget tables on pages 7 to 9. Type 1,3,7-9 in the Pages box and print to PDF. The result is a 5-page PDF containing pages 1, 3, 7, 8 and 9, in that order, while your original 20-page Word file stays unchanged.

Method 2: Save a Page Range as PDF With Save As

Use this when you want clickable links and bookmarks in the PDF and your pages are in one continuous block.

  1. Go to File > Save As (or File > Export > Create PDF/XPS).
  2. Choose a folder, then set Save as type to PDF (*.pdf).
  3. Click Options.
  4. Under Page range, choose Page(s) and enter the From and To pages, for example From 3 To 5.
  5. Optionally tick Create bookmarks using Headings.
  6. Click OK, then Save.

The same Options box also has Current page (the page your cursor is on) and Selection (only the text you highlighted before opening Save As).

Variations for Common Situations

  • Just one page: click anywhere on that page, then use Save As > Options > Current page.
  • Part of a page: select the paragraphs or table you need, then use Save As > Options > Selection.
  • Several separate ranges with links kept: save each range as its own PDF with Method 2, then combine them in your PDF tool.
  • On a Mac: Microsoft Print to PDF is a Windows feature. On macOS, go to File > Print, enter the page range, then choose PDF > Save as PDF at the bottom of the dialog.

Common Problems and Fixes

Problem Why it happens Fix
Wrong pages appear in the PDF Page numbering restarts in each section, so “page 3” is ambiguous. Use the section format, for example p3s2.
Microsoft Print to PDF is not in the printer list The Windows feature has been turned off or removed. Use Method 2 instead, or ask your IT team to turn the feature back on.
Links in the PDF are not clickable Printing to PDF flattens hyperlinks. Use Save As PDF (Method 2) instead.
A blank page appears An empty paragraph or page break sits inside your range. Turn on Home > Show/Hide ¶, remove the extra break, then try again.
“Selection” is greyed out in Options No text was selected before opening Save As. Close the dialog, select the text, and open Save As again.

Tips

  • Check page numbers first: if your document has sections with their own numbering, note the section number too and use the p#s# format.
  • Preview before saving: the right side of the Print screen previews the document so you can confirm you have the right pages.
  • Name files clearly: include the page range in the file name, such as “Report pages 3-5.pdf”, so you know what you sent.
  • Remove what should stay private: converting fewer pages keeps internal notes out of the PDF, but also check comments and tracked changes before you print.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I convert non-consecutive pages of a Word document to PDF?

Use File > Print, choose Microsoft Print to PDF, select Custom Print and type the pages separated by commas, such as 1,3,7-9.

Can I save just one page of a Word document as PDF?

Yes. Click on that page, go to File > Save As, choose PDF, click Options and pick Current page.

Does this change my original Word document?

No. Both methods create a separate PDF file. Your Word document keeps all its pages.

Why does Save As not accept “1,3,5” as a page range?

The Save As PDF options only take one continuous range (From and To). For scattered pages, use the Print to PDF method.

Do I need Adobe Acrobat or another paid tool?

No. Microsoft Print to PDF is built into Windows 10 and Windows 11, and Save As PDF is built into current versions of Word. You only need a separate PDF tool if you want to merge several PDFs afterwards.

Which method gives a smaller PDF?

It depends on the content. Save As PDF has an Optimize for: Minimum size option that usually makes the file smaller when the document has many images.

Wrapping Up

Converting only the Word pages you need is a two-minute job once you know where to look. Use Print to PDF with Custom Print when you need scattered pages like 1, 3 and 7-9, and Save As PDF with Options when you want one continuous range with working links. Try it on your next report before you hit send.
